Maligne Lake is located inside Jasper National Park about 48 kilometers (30 miles) from Jasper itself. However, at the Spirit Island viewpoint, you’ll be outside and need to walk along a short hiking trail. Once on land, we got to walk around and enjoy the views from a wooden platform. We had around 20 minutes to enjoy the views and look around before heading back to the boat to set sail again.

I live three hours south of Jasper, and, by far, one of my favorite things to do in the area is visit Maligne Lake. I suggest stopping at Maligne Canyon, as it’s a great beginner-friendly Jasper hike and definitely don’t miss Medicine Lake on your way in. Keep your eyes out for moose, sheep, and elk – Maligne Lake Road is one of the most well-known places to see wildlife in the park! Never get out of your car for a photograph and observe quickly and at a distance so that they can live peacefully in their natural habitat. Beyond its sheer scale, Maligne Lake is also incredibly blue, and if you hit it on a beautiful summer day, its colors will shine through. Like other glacial lakes, as the melting glaciers flow into the lake, they leave behind rock flour, which, when hit by sunlight, creates the lake’s distinctive color.

This area is full of mountain peaks, glaciers, and wildlife that you can only partially see from the shore. When you take this cruise, you get out on the water and can really drink in all the beauty the UNESCO World Heritage Site has to offer. There is parking at Maligne Lake, though during a beautiful summer weekend, the area becomes quite congested, and you might have to circle a few times before finding a place to park. There’s space to drop off elderly or disabled guests, as well as a few handicapped parking spots.
We set off early in the morning for our cruise, and the waters were super calm. Our tour guides gave us some helpful information about the nature we were seeing, as well as some historical background about the area.
